Bali, Nusa Penida, or the Gili Islands? Where Should You Go?
If you're planning a trip to Indonesia, you've probably considered Bali, Nusa Penida, and the Gili Islands. But which one is right for you?

I’ve visited all three multiple times, and each offers a unique experience. From the best snorkelling of my life in the Gilis to an unexpected scooter crash in Nusa Penida (oops), I’ve had my fair share of adventures. Let’s break it down.
Bali – The Iconic All-Rounder
Bali is a perfect mix of everything—beaches, mountains, nightlife, and culture. But it’s also busy, touristy, and the traffic can test your patience.
Why Bali is great:
Diverse experiences: One day you're chasing waterfalls in Ubud, the next you're sipping cocktails in Seminyak.
Digital nomad paradise: Great cafés, coworking spaces, and solid Wi-Fi.
Incredible food: Local warungs, vegan cafés, and fine dining.
Convenient transport: Grab, Gojek, taxis, and scooters make getting around easier.
Challenges:
Heavy traffic, especially in Canggu and Ubud.
Some areas feel over-commercialized.
Popular tourist spots can be crowded.
💰 Daily Budget Estimate:
Budget: $30-60 USD | $50-100 AUD
Mid-range: $60-100 USD | $100-160 AUD
Luxury: $150+ USD | $240+ AUD
🚀 Top Experience: Camping at Mount Batur for sunrise—an unforgettable view.

Nusa Penida – The Wild Adventure
Nusa Penida is stunning but rugged. Expect dramatic cliffs, beautiful beaches, and rough roads.
Why Nusa Penida is great:
Jaw-dropping landscapes: Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Diamond Beach.
World-class snorkeling and diving: Manta rays, vibrant coral, crystal-clear water.
Less crowded than Bali (but growing in popularity).
Challenges:

Poor road conditions—scooter accidents are common (I had one myself!).
Fewer accommodation and dining options.
Steep cliffs—caution is a must.
🚢 Getting there: Fast boats from Sanur.
💰 Daily Budget Estimate:
Budget: $40-60 USD | $65-100 AUD
Mid-range: $70-120 USD | $110-200 AUD
Luxury: $150+ USD | $240 AUD

Gili Islands – The Laid-Back Paradise
No cars, no motorbikes—just island vibes. The Gilis are perfect for relaxing, snorkelling with turtles, and cycling around (except on Gili Meno, where sand makes it tricky!).
Which Gili suits you?
Gili Trawangan (Gili T): The party island.
Gili Air: A balanced mix of social and chill vibes.
Gili Meno: Romantic and quiet, but less accessible.

Why the Gilis are great:
Incredible snorkelling (some of my best GoPro shots were here!).
No traffic noise—just bikes, horse carts (which I don’t support), and your feet.
Crystal-clear water and white sand beaches.
Challenges:
Unpredictable boat schedules.
Limited transport on Gili Meno—lugging luggage through sand isn’t fun.
🚲 Getting Around:
Gili T & Gili Air: Rent a bike.
Gili Meno: Walking is the best option.
🚢 Getting there from Nusa Penida: Fast boats via Bangsal Lombok
💰 Daily Budget Estimate:
Budget: $30-50 USD | $50-80 AUD
Mid-range: $60-100 USD | $100-160 AUD
Luxury: $150+ USD | $240+ AUD
So, Where Should You Go?
Bali: For variety, food, and culture.
Nusa Penida: For adventure and breathtaking landscapes.
Gili Islands: For a laid-back island escape with top-tier snorkelling.
